In 2022, Jon and I spent Christmas on assignment with Afar in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, reviewing a hotel that had just opened called Botanika—we even filmed a whole YouTube video about it. Although the Osa is one of the most biodiverse regions in a country most people visit for its biodiversity and nature, it’s often overlooked. But that’s also part of the allure: There’s tourism infrastructure here, but it’s not overly crowded and still feels like a bit of an adventure. Most of the Westerners we met were serious anglers who had been coming to Botanika even before it was Botanika (it was previously a family-owned fishing lodge), diehard surfers, and the odd family or wildlife enthusiast. Needless to say, it’s a worthy destination for an off-the-beaten-path Costa Rica trip. ➛ Things to do: Visit Corcovado, Costa Rica’s largest national park, either as a day trip or an overnight. We used Osa Wild for our tour—book in advance and opt for the boat-in (not drive-in) option. Try your hand at some world-class, deep-sea fishing (Jon would like to inform you he had the catch of his life, a Marlin on a fly-rod). Surf in nearby Matapolo. Hike to a waterfall. Learn how chocolate is made. And, no matter what, keep an eye out for monkeys and macaws. ➛ Eat, eat, eat: In Puerto Jimenez, Soda Marbella or Los Delfines are the best for local Costa Rican food (think: rice, beans, and fresh fish). If you’re looking for a party, Martinas in Matapalo is hard to beat. ➛ Where to stay: I’d recommend Botanika, a Hilton Curio property, for anyone traveling as a family or is primarily here for the fishing. It has great amenities (pool, beach club) plus friendly staff who’ll help you explore the area. My favorite part may have been the Insectopia Rainforest Exhibition & Research Center, which, in partnership with non-profit BioSur does critical research on the rainforest’s insects. It’s also near town and the airport. However, for something more romantic and remote, I’d go for Lapa Rios, an eco-lodge perched in the rainforest and close to the popular surf beach, Matapolo, another ~30 minutes away.
