Two off-the-beaten path travel ideas every other Monday.

Happy Monday, Subscriber First Name! Itβs Jessie B., bringing you two off-the-beaten-path travel ideas for the week: one for a last-minute getaway, and one to plan for (just a little) later in this year. With fall right around the corner, I couldnβt help but focus on two underrated, west coast fall getaways (sorry-not-sorry, New England!) that Iβm super excited to share with yβall. Letβs get to it!

Arnold + Murphys, CaliforniaSeptember
|
When it comes to the Sierra Nevadas, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite might get the most attention (and visitors), but there is so much more in this enormous mountain range than just these heavy-hitters. Case in point: the two tiny, neighboring towns of Arnold + Murphys California. I first visited last spring to review this super colorful Airbnb for work, but loved the area so much I went back just a few months later (for the Calaveras Frog Jumping Competition, no less!) But: I say go now, because fall is extra beautiful in the mountains, and this Airbnb is extra cozyβperfect for an off-the-beaten-path autumn getaway π β 3 things to do: Hike in Big Trees State Park, tour a cave at Mercer Caverns, and spend an afternoon wine tasting. I liked Allegorie tasting room in downtown Murphys, but for a vineyard visit, check out Ironstone Vineyards. More of a spirits kinda gal? Donβt miss Hinterhaus Distillery in Arnold. β Eat, eat, eat: I still daydream about the burrito from Pablito's Basecamp; loved the vibes at Italian eatery, Sarafina's Italian Kitchen, in Arnold, and the riverside, outdoor patio at Watering Hole in Murphys (kid tested + approved for all of yβall with littles). β Where to stay: If you can book it, you wonβt regret a stay at the colorful, retro-inspired Whimsy Home (Abba-themed bathroom, anyone?) in Arnold. We loved the cedar hot tub and cozy fireplace (watch my video tour). If not, look for a vacation rental in downtown Murphys (there arenβt many hotels out here), like this or this.

If youβve been, you know: New Mexico is a magical place. And while Santa Fe holds a special place in my heart, those seeking a more off-the-beaten path trip should head just a little further north to Taos. Especially since thereβs a number of exciting openings in this artsy little town worth checking outβIβm half about to plan a trip there just to stay in this gorgeous, new boutique hotel, Hotel Willa. Plus: if you make the trek in October, you can see some pretty incredible fall foliage. β Things to do: Catch a live concert at Taos Mesa Breweryβs Mothership or an event at Daleeeβtheir calendar is full of events like jazz brunch, trivia nights, volleyball, and more. Take a tour of the Taos Earthship. Learn about the areaβs history at the Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO world heritage site. In town: visit local galleries and swing by the farmerβs market if itβs a Saturday. β Eat, eat, eat: Start your day with breakfast burritos at Mary Janeβs (a food truck) or healthy dishes at Manzanita Market. Lunch at casual New Mexican dishes at The Alley Cantina (also the oldest building in town) or Orlandoβs. Get beers and dinner at Taos Mesa Brewery, or elevated, organic home cooking in a former chapel at The Love Apple (open for dinner Wed-Sun). Rolling Still is great for cocktails. β Where to stay: When I first visited Taos a few years ago, the boutique hotel options were slim, so I was excited to see Hotel Willa open their doors in last summer. Itβs in a restored 1940s motel in the townβs historic center, filled with local art and New Mexican-inspired decor, and terracotta walls that come together in a cozy, design-forward space. They also have an on-site restaurant/bar (come fall, the best seat is by the fireplace) and pool.
